Next stop: southern France, Avignon in Provence.
Paris opened my 85-day European journey. Six days later I was holding a rail ticket and a backpack, ready to take a long-distance train to the next destination.
This was my first move of the trip. Leaving Paris without looking back, I could almost see myself stamping a map with a firm mark of progress. It gave me permission to keep going.

南法，普羅旺斯，薰衣草。
放眼望去大地都被紫色覆蓋，是我在規劃這趟歐行腿以前，對南法唯一的想像。
Avignon? I had no idea where that was.
直到拿出打從高中畢業後首次翻閱的歐洲地圖對照，我才知道，喔～原來那個我們熟知的薰衣草之鄉普羅旺斯，其實是個大範圍的地區統稱，指的是法國東南部的「普羅旺斯 – 阿爾卑斯 – 藍色海岸大區」（有必要這麼長嗎？），裡頭包含六個省份，連沒有水怪的尼斯、等著走紅地毯的坎城都在此，而亞維儂則是普羅旺斯地區裡最西邊那一省份的大城市。

On the train I stared out the window, waiting to be ambushed by purple lavender. In early July, seeing endless lavender fields was my greatest hope. But beautiful yellow-green farmland rolled past with no purple in sight. It was not until the next day, on a day tour to a lavender-growing area, that I found the Provence I had imagined.
So Provence is not purple everywhere. Lavender is simply the image selected and polished to represent it, hiding the region’s other light.
我帶著二十五年來的狹隘世界認知和陳年刻板印象來到歐洲，花上三個月，一邊走過一邊迅速的親手將它們擊破。
但無論如何，交通方便的亞維儂都是個適合成為南法首站、也當成普羅旺斯據點的城鎮。
In under three hours I said goodbye to Paris and reached Avignon in southern France. Nobody on the train understood where I wanted to go… unless I pointed at my ticket.
It was not their poor English. I had memorised the Chinese translations of place names, so when I spoke I tried to pronounce the Chinese name with a fake French accent. I promise, it failed every time.
Avignon is pronounced roughly “ah-vee-nyon” in French and “av-ee-nyon” in English. Taiwan calls it “Yawei-nong,” a translation nobody recognises. The opening sound is already wrong; no amount of dramatic accent can resurrect the original. Even mainland China’s “Aviniweng” is closer to the real Avignon.
相對於法國北邊的巴黎是充滿時尚設計與古典交錯的法國皇家重地，南法的亞維儂則是個表演藝術氣息濃厚的天主教廷城鎮，因為這兩個城鎮，直到 18 世紀前都是兩國兩制的狀態，讓亞維儂與巴黎有著不同的街景樣貌，亞維儂甚至到現在還完整保留著中古世紀的城牆，要不是路上的人們還是講著法文、想買東西還是會走進家樂福，我還真會以為來到了一個國中國。

走進亞維儂的老城區更能嗅出截然不同的氛圍，在歐洲看不完的哥德式建築馬上繼續加倍奉上，亞維儂曾經是除了梵蒂岡外，天主教廷的第二個教廷所在處，14 世紀時因為歐洲動盪危機四伏，羅馬教廷決定搬遷到亞維儂，建了有尖塔的教皇宮，也蓋了有耶穌和聖母在戶外當顯眼招牌的教堂，歷經七位教皇在這裡統治和用心建設，直到 18 世紀末的法國大革命，亞維儂才成為法國的一部分。

I had not even left France, yet its layered European history let me encounter so many cultures in a few hours of train travel. It was very different from the landscapes of Australia and a perfect warm-up for the marvels of European rail travel to come.
但巴黎與亞維儂也有共同點，這兩個十足歷史味的地方，卻都能被法國人的藝術給包裝出新感受。
我來訪的七月，除了是薰衣草紫爆的季節，也是亞維儂城一年中最爆炸的月份，世界著名的亞維儂藝術節就在此時展開，這是目前法國仍有延續到今日的最古老的藝術節。
這天剛好是藝術節正式開始的第一天，原本安靜的中古城堡，在世界各地前來的表演團隊與參觀的訪客湧入下，頓時人聲鼎沸，突然我覺得亞維儂就像是守在鄉村的爺爺奶奶們，每一年就在等待著農曆年節時迎接著全家子歸來團聚。
Every wall was covered with posters for independent festival shows. Late-arriving groups climbed ladders to find any remaining blank space, turning the old city’s yellow palette colourful. These young arrivals probably lowered its average age by forty years in an instant (I helped a little).

漫步在亞維儂老城是很享受的事，特別是在巴黎提心吊膽的生活過後，治安名聲好多了的亞維儂總算能讓我稍微喘口氣，路邊不再是可怕的街頭幸運繩魔術師，在亞維儂的老城裡似乎任何一塊空地都有可能是舞台，席地或在百年石階上一坐，就能看一場真正的街頭藝人表演。亞維儂藝術節還沒正式開始，隨處的表演藝術已經為亞維儂藝術節暖場。

The little city can be explored in less than half a day. July brings the biggest crowds, but escaping the noise is easy because beautiful curved lanes open everywhere.

One afternoon I climbed to the Palais des Papes and the rocky park beside it, looked down from Avignon’s high ground, then followed the walls out of the old city. Across the Rhône, a bridge stopped before reaching the opposite bank: the Pont Saint-Bénézet, once the only bridge linking Avignon’s papal city and the French royal territory, also known as the Pont d’Avignon. After repeated floods destroyed it, only the broken section remains. Roads replaced its original function, but the bridge became one of Avignon’s defining sights, shining in the sunset.
Avignon was once a papal city, and its bridge once carried people across a great river. Like an old man in the countryside, it watches the era change and its important functions disappear one by one. Yet it stays, always offering young people a place to perform. Even one lively festival a year is enough to fill it with hopeful light.
