This genuine Boeing 747 is actually a hostel called STF Jumbo Stay Stockholm, dedicated to flying travelers straight to the land of Nod. Jumbo Stay isn’t particularly cheap compared with hostels in the city—the most affordable four-person bunk room still costs nearly NT$2,000 per person per night. But among the chain hotels surrounding the airport, it remains a very good-value option. In fact, one of the main reasons Jumbo Stay caught my eye was its convenient access to and from the airport.

I couldn’t believe it—a forest appeared right before my eyes. Rows of tall, straight trees lined both sides of the trail, while a two-way path seemingly reserved for pedestrians ran alongside the railway tracks. Runners wove through every now and then, and the gently falling snow was the perfect finishing touch. Yet this hidden gem was tucked away just off a major city road in Stockholm, Sweden, down a small lane at a fork in the street. Located behind Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, it is called Stockholm Norra Djurgården, and I was lucky enough to see its snow-white winter side. It wasn’t a famous tourist attraction or even part of my planned itinerary, yet it became the story I remember most fondly from Stockholm.

The hotel has its own ICEBAR, serving cocktails made with Sweden’s beloved Absolut vodka and giving visitors the fun of swaying to music inside an ice palace kept at -5°C. ICEBAR later opened branches in Stockholm and London, along with occasional pop-up experiences in other cities, so you don’t have to venture all the way into the Arctic Circle to enjoy such an unusual night out. All the ice used is made from the pristine waters of the Torne River in the Swedish Arctic and shipped to each location.

This hotel is built from ice, and every room is a stunning exhibition of ice sculptures. Professional artists redesign it from scratch every year—and yes, you can actually stay there! Located in the village of Jukkasjärvi within Sweden’s Arctic Circle, ICE HOTEL was the world’s first ice hotel and remains the largest. It has rooms made of ice, a bar made of ice, and apparently even a church made of ice. Better yet, every visit brings a completely unique version of the hotel.
