Yet paradoxically, my understanding felt sparse and pockmarked. What was daily life actually like in that distant part of northern Japan? What did the landscape, settlements, and environment look like? How did Fukushima's people and other life coexist? I wanted to glimpse the Fukushima that lay beyond the media's gaze.

      | My European Trek | Thank You to the Me Who Didn’t Give Up—and Let Running Lead Me to Stockholm’s Secret Urban Forest

      I couldn’t believe it—a forest appeared right before my eyes. Rows of tall, straight trees lined both sides of the trail, while a two-way path seemingly reserved for pedestrians ran alongside the railway tracks. Runners wove through every now and then, and the gently falling snow was the perfect finishing touch. Yet this hidden gem was tucked away just off a major city road in Stockholm, Sweden, down a small lane at a fork in the street. Located behind Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, it is called Stockholm Norra Djurgården, and I was lucky enough to see its snow-white winter side. It wasn’t a famous tourist attraction or even part of my planned itinerary, yet it became the story I remember most fondly from Stockholm.

        In the space of ten frantic days, I booked accommodation and two flights and stocked up on gear that could withstand sub-zero temperatures. Other than the one thing I knew for sure—“head into the Arctic Circle to see the aurora”—I set off once again on my European adventure with luggage packed for 12 days and absolutely no itinerary. Countless unforgettable surprises from the journey, distilled into a few short phrases. This isn’t a Sweden travel guide: you won’t find directions or a breakdown of how much I spent. This is simply a record of the moments that moved me most deeply along the way.
