Sometimes people ask me, “How do you always seem to have an endless supply of courage—to challenge yourself and set off on new adventures?”
But honestly, I often have countless doubts about myself too.
That was exactly how I felt at the Nagoya Women’s Marathon. Standing at the starting line, I was filled with uncertainty. I didn’t even know why I was there. It felt as though time had kept pushing me forward until I had no choice but to face that moment. My fear and confusion outweighed the anticipation I had built up over the past several months. The truth is, I’ve always been a timid person.
But it’s precisely because we feel afraid that we can see how much we’ve grown.
Once you take that first step, the obstacle is already behind you. The journey will have its hardships and its joyful moments. You may completely lose sight of why you started, only to find your own answers somewhere along the way.
My panic came from not believing in myself, from feeling that I wasn’t ready. But there is never really a moment when you’re completely prepared—you can only be more or less prepared. Everything you’ve done to prepare will reveal itself along the journey, and you can always adjust as you go, tackling each challenge one by one.
Whether it’s running or traveling, every new challenge is bound to be difficult—but it will definitely be worth it.
And how lucky we are if, along the way, we find companions who support us and point us in the right direction. Those companions are already out there on the road; the only way to meet them is to begin the journey yourself.
