We walked together from Paihia to Ngunguru—180 kilometers of companionship.
I met her at a museum—an American girl named Sara dressed in standard TA gear. I approached her to chat, and we ended up hiking together for a long stretch north of Auckland. Later, we parted ways to travel solo since we had different rest stops planned.
We stayed in touch by text, and I sent her trail updates as I got ahead. Eventually we met up in Auckland and set out together to ring in 2017 with hiking.
Everyone sets off with their own plans, yet we can cross paths and team up again anytime. Though none of us knew what lay ahead, it all became part of the journey.
