I continued heading south alone toward Auckland, walking on a quiet industrial road. The sun was blazing that day as I climbed a slope, when suddenly an oncoming car spotted me and slowed down. I thought to myself: ‘Is this person going to ask me what I’m doing carrying all this strange gear?’
The man inside rolled down his window while still holding his phone to his ear. I smiled politely and waved hello. Then he stretched one arm out the window and handed me a bottle of… ice… cold… Sprite! He gave me a thumbs up and drove off, leaving me on the verge of tears.
My goodness! This was absolutely the most wonderful Sprite of my entire life!
It’s magical – once you’re on a hiking trail, every small moment becomes deeply memorable, and any outstretched hand becomes the most touching memory.
